Issue at a Glance

Hydro excavation (hydrovac) generates liquid slurry, typically dumped at various receiving sites.
To deal with this slurry, multiple bins or pits hold it until it dries, or the slurry is spread out on drying beds. This traditional treatment method requires a large area and can encounter issues when it rains or snows.
The process for liquid slurry disposal often looks like this:

  1. Specialized vacuum trucks transport the slurry to a transfer station
  2. Bulking agents such as sawdust are used (usually bulking the slurry up by 50-200%)
  3. Dump trucks transport the increased waste load to a final disposal site
This means more trucks needed, more time wasted and higher disposal costs incurred.

  • Using Extrac Tech's reagent, the hydro excavation material is transformed into a dry, earth-like finish.
  • This solution requires no in-ground sumps, and provides optimal efficiency for expensive hydro excavation trucks and low-cost disposal options for solid material.
  • The 1% dosage required for solidification with MetaFLO’s reagent results in a much smaller quantity than would be produced by sawdust or wood chip bulking methods.

Extrac Tech Solution

Our non-toxic, inert* solidification reagents convert tunneling and drilling spoils to a manageable solid, on-site, in minutes. The solidified waste can then pass Slump and Paint Filter Tests, and typically requires a dose of less than 1.0% wt/wt.

The solidified slurry is transferred to dump trucks to be transported directly to the final disposal site. It reduces risks, lowers operational costs, and promotes a safer, more sustainable waste management approach in tunneling projects.
